FOUR MAIN TYPES OF LIPOSUCTION
With so many different liposuction techniques available today, it can be difficult to tell which techniques are worth it and what is hype. To help answer some of your most popular questions we have included a breakdown of the 4 most popular liposuction techniques.
Keep in mind, the single most important decision in obtaining your desired results is the ability of your plastic surgeon.
| Power Assisted Liposuction ~(PAL) | |
| Technique | A special cannula is used that produces rapid, small vibrations to break up fat cells that are then suctioned out. |
| Claims | Power assist helps the surgeon remove fat easier and more efficiently. |
| Reality | Power assist may be helpful to surgeon. Less effective at removing stubborn fibrous fat. |
| Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction~(UAL) | |
| Technique | Uses ultrasonic sound waves to disrupt fat cells. This is then removed with normal liposuction. |
| Claims | It can remove difficult fat and thus is better for problem areas. |
| Reality | Increased complications and risk of skin damage from burning of dermis. Studies show it is not more effective than traditional liposuction. |
| Laser Assisted Liposuction~(SmartLipo) | |
| Technique | Laser energy is administrated in conjunction with a small cannula to break up and dissolve fatty tissue beneath the skin. |
| Claims | It can address all your liposuction needs. |
| Reality | Technique only effective at removing small amounts of fat and more useful for minor touch ups or small areas of fat pockets. Claims to tighten skin are not proven. |
| Traditional Liposuction~(Tumescent Liposuction) | |
| Technique | Utilizes large volumes of natural saline, containing a local anesthetic and adrenaline, which is dispersed into the fatty tissue making fat cells easier to suction out with the cannula. |
| Claims | Has the lowest rate of complications and greatest patient satisfaction. |
| Reality | Remains the gold standard for liposuction because if it's rate of satisfaction and low complication rate. Preferred method for vast majority of board certified plastic surgeons. |
