Injections to Trim Body Fat Lack Medical Confirmation
Orlando Sentinel (FL) (2008-05-01) P. H2; Bosshardt, Richard T.
Tavares, Fla., plastic surgeon Dr. Richard T. Bosshardt says mesotherapy is comprised of injections of substances into skin fat, causing it to dissipate and be removed. The practice, however, causes numerous problems. Bosshardt explains that the substance injected into the fat is a combination of medications, vitamins, and herbs, and that the Food and Drug Administration has not sanctioned a lot of the ingredients employed in mesotherapy injections. He states it is tough to figure out how effective mesotherapy is.
Due to the absence of standardized "cocktails" for mesotherapy, Bosshardt says there are many unanswered issues surrounding the procedure, including how it causes fat cells to disappear, what happens to the fat, and what the actual complication rate is.
Bosshardt stresses that certain practitioners do not obey safe injection protocols. He adds that mesotherapy is expensive, with one injection costing several hundred dollars, and the majority of patients needing between five and 10 sessions. Bosshardt concludes, "The verdict on mesotherapy is still out."
