BOTOX®

BOTOX® will soften or eliminate frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet, and other wrinkles.  BOTOX® is a purified protein that is used in extremely small doses to eliminate unwanted facial lines such as frown lines between the eyebrows created through repeated, often subconscious facial expressions. Tens of thousands of people receive BOTOX® treatments for a variety of conditions and it is now a popular method for reversing visible signs of aging.  BOTOX® blocks impulses from the nerve to the facial muscle that are related to expression lines. Injecting BOTOX® into a facial muscle freezes and relaxes the muscle so it does not contract.

Approximately 5 days after the injection, the overlying skin becomes smooth and unwrinkled, while the untreated parts of the face remain unaffected.  Botox treatments take only a few minutes. The results are noticeable in a few days and peak in 5-7 days. Gradually over a period of 3-5 months the effects wear off and the muscles will regain functionality.  Repeat BOTOX® treatments can be done as muscle function returns extending results.  No, there is no danger of botulism. Botulism occurs when large amounts of the toxin are ingested into the system, usually from eating contaminated food.  Doses of about 3,000 units are considered highly toxic.  The cosmetic BOTOX® procedure uses only about 20-40 units.  Side effects are minimal.  You may experience a little discomfort as the solution is injected at the treatment site and there is a small chance of bruising. There have been no known reports of permanent side effects.  In very rare cases there is a temporary, slight lowering of the eyelid which often goes unnoticed. BOTOX® has been used effectively since 1980 to treat lazy eye and uncontrolled eye blinking.  BOTOX® has been used to treat forehead wrinkles for the past 17 years.  Immediately after the treatment there may be a small amount of redness at the injection site which dissipates in a few hours.
